CMWU received a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for a field visit to Al-Shati Camp, west of Gaza City, to follow up on the inspection and repair works being carried out by CMWU on stormwater drainage systems, with ICRC support. The interventions focus particularly on densely populated areas hosting residents and displaced people, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen preparedness for the winter season and reduce the risks of rainwater accumulation.
The visit included a review of excavation and inspection works at two nearby locations along Al-Rashid Street, near Baghdad Mosque, approximately 150 meters apart. The works aim to inspect the stormwater drainage line supplying Pumping Station No. 3, identify the location and nature of the malfunction, and determine the maintenance requirements needed to address it.
It is worth noting that maintenance and repair works on stormwater drainage and wastewater systems across the Gaza Strip are being carried out under extremely challenging conditions and with limited resources. CMWU continues to exert efforts to mitigate, to the greatest extent possible and within available capacities, the impacts of rainwater flooding during the winter season. In this context, CMWU has issued an urgent appeal calling for immediate intervention to facilitate the entry of essential maintenance supplies and engine oils required for the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities, amid the restrictions imposed on their entry. CMWU warned that the continuation of these restrictions could lead to serious consequences and a humanitarian disaster during the rainy season.
