CMWU Intensifies Field Interventions to Mitigate the Impact of the Low-Pressure Weather System

Published on

Amid the heavy rainfall affecting the Gaza Strip, CMWU continues to carry out field interventions and emergency works to mitigate the impact of the low-pressure weather system and reduce rainwater accumulation as much as possible, particularly in low-lying areas, residential neighborhoods, and displacement camps.

In this context, CMWU teams carried out field interventions at two locations in North Gaza Governorate: Al-Saftawi area in Jabalia, near Al-Saftawi Basin, and Al-Fakhoura area in Beit Lahia, extending to Al-Tayeb Hall. These interventions were implemented under the heavy machinery rental and labor provision project, funded by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in cooperation with Jabalia and Beit Lahia municipalities. The works aim to reduce rainwater accumulation and mitigate its impact on residents and residential areas.

The interventions included field works to address rainwater accumulation, monitor drainage networks, and clear and clean drainage lines, helping improve water flow and reduce the risks of water accumulation.

CMWU continues to respond to numerous emergency reports concerning rainwater accumulation and flooding in several areas of Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip, mobilizing its technical and human resources and carrying out the necessary interventions within the available capacities.

In light of the worsening humanitarian crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of displaced people across the Gaza Strip, CMWU has issued a series of urgent appeals calling on international organizations and relevant stakeholders to intervene immediately and facilitate the entry of spare parts, technical supplies, and maintenance materials, including oils and supplies required for maintaining heavy machinery and equipment used in stormwater drainage and wastewater operations. These supplies are essential to ensure the continued operation of this equipment, enable field teams to sustain their interventions, reduce the risks of rainwater accumulation and flooding, and maintain the minimum possible level of water and wastewater services.

CMWU reaffirms that its efforts and monitoring of field conditions will continue around the clock, in coordination and cooperation with all municipalities, as part of its responsibility toward residents and its commitment to mitigating the impact of adverse weather conditions, despite the extensive damage to infrastructure and service networks across the Gaza Strip.
