CMWU Implements Field Interventions in Al-Mawasi to Prepare for Winter and Reduce Rainwater Accumulation Risks

Published on

As part of preparations for the winter season and efforts to reduce the risks of rainwater accumulation and flooding into displacement tents, CMWU, in cooperation with Khan Younis and Rafah municipalities, carried out a series of field interventions in Al-Mawasi. The interventions included improving stormwater drainage and implementing preventive measures to protect displacement tents, with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

In this context, CMWU, in cooperation with Khan Younis Municipality, installed a 100 cm-diameter manhole, stormwater grates, and 10-inch-diameter pipes, each 6 meters long, near the German Chalet in the Regional Road – Fash Farsh area. The work targeted a location where significant rainwater accumulation occurs during the winter season and periods of low-pressure weather systems. These measures will help improve drainage, reduce water accumulation, minimize disruption to vehicle and pedestrian movement, and reduce the risk of flooding in nearby displacement camps.

In a related intervention, CMWU, in cooperation with Rafah Municipality, supplied sand to establish protective barriers around displacement tents in several camps. These included Brazil, Fash Farsh, Al-Rahma Al-Janoubi, Al-Bir wal-Taqwa, Al-Israa, Al-Sumoud, Al-Nakheel, the Qatari Camp, and Bir 19 camps, in addition to several other camps. The aim is to prevent rainwater from flowing into tents and protect displaced people from the risks of water accumulation during the winter season.

These interventions are part of CMWU’s ongoing efforts, in cooperation with municipalities, to strengthen preparedness for the rainy season and reduce its impact on residents and displaced people, particularly in camps and residential areas most vulnerable to rainwater accumulation.
